Our Story

Fast forward to the fall of 2003, a small group of high school students gathered in the Horton's living room and bandied about ideas for club names.

The "Purple Unicorns" was as quickly discarded as "Weatherford Debate Club."

However, the coach had a habit of closing club meetings with the phrase "get your evidence assignments in ASAP!" And as this group of brilliant young minds collaboratively ruminated over acronym possibilities, "ASAP" grew increasingly popular.

ASAP was flexible.

It could mean "Act Swiftly Awesome Pachyderm," "As Soon As Possible," or "After School Academic Program."

It was appropriate to our group.

It could mean both "Attractive Scholars Arguing Policy" and "Analytical Scholars Arguing Policy."

But most importantly, it was the only one that embodied our values.

You see, we believe in the power of perspective. The ability to analyze policy, break down its workings, explain the why of it, and the motives behind it is an invaluable tool. That ability ultimately allows us to shape and inform the perspectives of our audience.  A grave responsibility. How to deal with that responsibility? How do you react when your audience does not always see things your way?

Always Say A Prayer.

We believe that God has given mankind the unique ability to communicate ideas, and share perspectives with one another. What better way to reset and focus our own perspective than to acknowledge the One Whose perspective matters most? We find that when we can refocus on a bigger picture, winning is suddenly not nearly as important as the relationships we forge. By placing the greater emphasis on the quality of our workmanship and on maintaining healthy friendships, those life lessons can be valued a little more than trophies on a shelf.

That's our story.
