About the Instructors

 

Rachel Horton - Founder, Head Coach

Rachel is the founder and head coach at ASAP Debate Club. She has more than a decade of experience with coaching policy debate teams nationwide in both NCFCA and Stoa USA homeschool debate leagues. 

Highlights:

- Under Rachel's direct leadership from 2004-2008, ASAP Debate club members consistently qualified for NCFCA National Championship tournaments at a rate of 80% or better

 From 2004-2007, Rachel served as the Assistant Coordinator and Novice Track coach at Patrick Henry College's two-week debate camp - regularly hosting more than 80 high school students per camp 

- More than 10 years experience coaching and mentoring various team policy competitors nationwide to achieve their goals with competition at the National Championship level 

- Appointed for two-year term as the Aide and Public Engagement Specialist to Fort Worth Mayor, Betsy Price to develop and execute outreach  strategies on behalf of the Office of the Mayor

- Graduated from Texas Wesleyan University: B.S. in Political Science, B.A. in English 


Kim Horton -  Executive Director 

Kim Horton is an accomplished educator with more than 27 years of experience with providing logic, algebra and advanced mathematics instruction in private and cooperative schools. Mrs. Horton graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Math Education from the University of Oklahoma shortly before marrying her husband, Jim Horton, of 36 years (and counting!) and moving to Texas. In addition to the experience of homeschooling her  five children, Mrs. Horton is a passionate advocate for speech and debate practices. 

In her role as the Executive Director of ASAP Debate Club, Mrs. Horton provides crucial guidance in handling club logistics for club meetings, coordinating club registration for tournaments, ensuring travel logistics are in place, and mentoring ASAP club parents.

Highlights

- Mrs. Horton has 13 years of experience with directing and coordinating all aspects of tournament hosting across 2 homeschool debate leagues. 

-  These aspects have included roles in official capacities such as:


     * Tournament Director

     * Tournament Set-up Coordinator   

     * Host Home Coordinator

     * Community Judge Recruitment

     * Ballot Push/Ballot Check-in

     * Judge's Orientation

     * Tab Room Assistant

     * Hall Monitor Coordinator

Jonathan Horton - Assistant Coach

Jonathan was involved in competitive speech and debate for 6 years at the regional, state, and national levels. He received invitations to compete at nationals in Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Team Policy, and Parliamentary debate. His unwavering commitment to excellence in each of his events is the secret to his successes. With the experience of more than 3 years of coaching and mentoring, he walks students through the process of finding and setting the highest standards for research and argumentation. 

Highlights

- Developed curriculum and repeatedly requested to lecture on debate theory and strategic applications

- Promoted through the ranks to Assistant Comptroller at Five Star Measurement

- Graduated B.S. in Accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington 

- Currently working in the accounting department at PPG Health in Fort Worth, Jonathan is  studying for his Master's Degree at UTA in Finance.

Rebekah Horton - Guest Coach

For Rebekah, communication is her bread and butter. Now the Marketing Coordinator at Elliot Management Group, she still credits her years of competition in high school speech and debate as one of the most useful experiences of her life. Rebekah is quickly gaining the respect of her peers in the DFW marketing world as one of the foremost communicators for strategic PR and marketing methods.

Highlights:

- Developed curriculum and coordinated debate workshops during her tenure as ASAP Debate Club's assistant coach for two years and head coach for one year

- Instrumental in assisting a local strategic communications PR firm go through the process of incorporation

- Member of the Public Relations Society of America since 2015

- She has earned her green belt in Tae Kwon Do and looks forward to working on her black belt

- Graduated from Abilene Christian University: B.B.A. in Marketing, B.A. in English
