Debate is just arguing, right?

Not exactly.

Debate is a unique activity that allows two individuals, representing different sides of a story, the opportunity to explain and defend their positions on any given topic. In the process of explaining and defending their respective positions, each individual begins to clarify their thoughts and target their communication in order to give the most comprehensive and satisfactory response to their audience.

Debate sets rules, time limits and speech order, and requires the participants to behave with respect towards one another and maintain professional standards in both appearance and in presentation.

At the end of the day, participants in a formal debate learn to excel at critical thinking, communication skills, and ultimately, to become careful examiners of the elements of change.
