Rachel Horton - ASAP Coach
Rachel competed for two years as a high school student in the National Christian Forensics and Communication Association (NCFCA). She tried her wings in nearly every speech event and succeeded in qualifying to Nationals in 2003 with the wildcard event: Duo Impromptu. In 2004, she and her team policy partner competed in 7 tournaments; winning one, placing in the top ten at four, then went on to receive 26th place at Nationals.
During her whirlwind experience as a competitor, however, Rachel loved assisting younger or less experienced competitors who came her way. So, while working full-time as a Research Assistant at WallBuilders, she continued coaching ASAP Debate Club. During the three years she coached ASAP Deabte, members consistently qualified for Nationals at a rate of 80% or better. During the summers of 2004-2007, Rachel served as the Assistant Coordinator and Novice Track coach at Patrick Henry College's two-week debate camp that regularly hosted over 80 students per camp.
From 2007-2011, Rachel was a full-time student at Texas Wesleyan University, while still assisting with workshops, consulting with other coaches, and privately coaching. She also continued her own pursuits in college: qualifying for the American Collegiate Moot Court Nationals in 2010, receiving awards for performances in Model Arab League competitions, managing the school newspaper's website as the multi-media editor, and serving two terms as the student government vice president.
After graduating in 2011 with her B.A. in English and B.S. in Political Science, Rachel accepted a teaching position at Destiny Christian Academy, was a guest instructor at Speak Out North Texas, and volunteered at the various debate tournaments her younger brothers attended.
Now, Rachel works as a Revenue Accountant Assistant at XTO Energy Inc., is actively pursuing a graduate certificate with Regent University in Homeland Security and Terrorism Studies, and is thrilled to return to coaching ASAP.
